- Place of origin: South and South East Asia.
- Description: Evergreen, perennial creeper with heart-shaped aromatic leaves that are fondly used as the main ingredient in ‘Paan’ along with areca nut and or tobacco.
- Grow best: In well-draining soil in partial shade and adequate irrigation.
- Use: Grown outdoors even along walls and fences. Used in paan. As a mark of respect, a sheaf of betel leaves and a few areca nuts are offered to elders during auspicious occasions and during worship. Also in preparation of Myanmar/ Thai/Malaysian noodle soups.
